Final report summary - Scientific basis for a mushroom food group in the Australian Dietary Guidelines (MU22001)
Mushrooms are currently classified within the ‘vegetables and legumes/beans’ food group in the Australian Dietary Guidelines (ADG), under ‘other vegetables’. However, mushrooms are biologically distinct from vegetables, belonging to the fungi kingdom, and have a unique nutritional, bioactive and culinary profile.
This Hort Innovation-funded project, delivered through the Australian Mushroom Growers’ Association (AMGA), established an evidence base for repositioning mushrooms within the ADG. The project reviewed scientific literature, assessed dietary modelling and considered international dietary guidelines, consumer trends and stakeholder perspectives.
